Kyle Martin

While passing through southern Wisconsin recently, Carl enjoyed visiting with award-winning plein air painter, teacher and former skateboard designer Kyle Martin. Kyle compares plein air painting to skateboarding, except that if you're painting, you're less likely to get sent away. Kyle studied art education at the University of Wisconsin, and enjoys using sophisticated color harmonies to paint light on the landscape and teaching the concepts and skills at the heart of good painting. There is a video of him plein air painting on youtube, where he quotes at length from Kevin MacPherson: "The photographic image has set the standard of representation that many people equate with artistic merit...Art must have the human element."
