Randall David Tipton
Oregon artist and instructor Randall David Tipton's paintings combine landscape and abstract elements in oils or watermedia. This 9x12 painting (left) was done plein air, but he often just takes photos, sketches, notes or memories for reference material to be used later in the studio. When painting in watercolor, he often uses Yupo paper, which makes it easier to be spontaneous and experimental.
"I am mostly self taught and have been deeply influenced by the American abstract expressionists, particularly by their belief in improvisation as path to something unique and meaningful. I was fortunate to study with Richard Diebenkorn in the first master class at the new Santa Fe Institute of Fine Art."
This year he was one of the artists in residence at Brush Creek Foundation for the Arts near Saratoga, Wyoming. This 8x10 Geothermal Study (below) was done in Yellowstone.
