Joyce Washor - Big Art, Small Canvas

by Sarah Judson November 06, 2011

Artist, instructor and author Joyce Washor paints in watercolor and oils, using a 3"x4" format. She uses complementary color schemes to achieve both rich neutrals and vibrant contrasts. Her book (published by North Light) is entitled Big Art, Small Canvas and explains how to use quality materials and the principles of color, composition, scale, texture, depth, highlights and shadows to create impressive paintings in a small space. She also has two instructional DVDs available, one for oils and one for watercolor. She will be teaching two workshops next year, in Naples, Florida in January and in Chatham, Massachusetts in September. "I have been using a small format of 3x4 inches since 1997 as a result of a rotator cuff injury. As it's turned out it's a case of turning lemons into lemonade! I love this small scale in still life, portraiture and landscape."
