Rusty Jones

Texas-based artist Rusty Jones doesn't get many chances to paint snow, but he took advantage of an opportunity last February and won an award at the Plein Air Southwest  event last month with this 12x16 plein air oil on linen, entitled Snow Day. This month he (along with Bob Rohm and Quiang Huang) is showing at Riverbend Fine Art in Marble Falls, in the Texas Hill Country northwest of Austin. After a career in medical illustration and sports art, he is now enjoying plein air painting. "Painting outdoors takes passion. Without it the wind, heat, snow and bugs will drive you indoors. I enjoy my time in the studio, but it doesn't make my heart race like it does when I am outside." His latest blog entry  introduces his new ebay store for finding good homes for field studies that may not get into a gallery but still deserve to make their way out into the world...such as this colorful 8x10 oil on canvas entitled Rocky Mountain Creek.
