A fourth-generation native of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, award-winning artist
Kathryn Mapes Turner goes well beyond the genre of western painter, even though Jackson is still one of her favorite places. She studied at Notre Dame University, spent a semester in Italy, attended the Corcoran School of Art in Washington D.C. and earned a Master's Degree from the University of Virginia. She now travels the world to paint in different locations.
She embraces different subjects and mediums, from oil to watercolor and drawing, from landscapes to portraits, animals, figures and archetecture. Her style is a painterly synthesis of realism, impressionism and abstraction.
"I strive to create paintings that record my own experience of the subject’s essential spirit and energy, not an imitation of a fixed surface reality."
Shown above is
Mountain Sunset, a 16"x20" plein air oil on canvas.
"Since back-lighting on the mountains only lasts a few moments, I would return to this locations each day just before sunset with my paints to capture this fleeting light."
Below is an 8"x10" oil on linen entitled
May.

Along with three other painters, Kathryn owns and operates
Trio Fine Art Gallery in Jackson, Wyoming
