Derek Davis

by Sarah Judson March 18, 2013

Minnesota painter Derek Davis is a second generation artist who absorbed the concepts of design as a child. He focuses on composition, light and mood in his landscapes, paying as much attention to the abstract elements of the scene as to the physical dimension. He works (and teaches) in both oils and watercolors. The plein air tree study below is entitled Sentry Over the Sled-Dog Yard. "While painting this in the boundary waters of northern Minnesota, the sled dogs in the yard below were howling and barking, I pondered as I usually do wondering what kind of stories this tree would have to tell ..." This subtle view of a white house in winter, entitled Winter's Reflected Light (right) won Best of Show at the Red Wing winter plein air festival.
