Jo Sherwood

by Sarah Judson September 26, 2016

Oil painter Jo Sherwood is a portraitist and traveler, recording people and cultures from six continents. Born and raised in Rotterdam, Holland, she graduated with Honors from the Academy of Fine Arts there, studying the classical techniques of the Masters.

She has spent decades capturing images of remote and isolated cultures, before they succumb to globalization. Her website has a page entitled "The Best of Burros" with scenes of burros hard at work in more than a dozen different countries, from Peru (above) to Mexico, Holland, Jordan, France, etc. Below is a young Friesian horse being trained on a farm in Holland.

"It is a privilege to record these cultures in oil before they vanish, saving a slice of history. Immersing myself in these rich cultures inspires me in doing my best work."
