Painting Perceptions Blog

Painting Perceptions is a blog of interviews, videos, images and discussions around the topic of painting from life. It was started in early 2009 by Larry Groff, and includes interviews of well over 120 different painters, ranging from well-known names to emerging artists. It has grown to become as much about perceptions on painting as it is about perceptual painting, covering everything from loose abstraction to precise realism and everything in between.
Larry says, "
Over the past few decades, art publications and art schools have increasingly de-emphasized traditional figurative art training and now focus much more on art theory and fashion. The formal concerns of figurative painting often get short shrift compared to the narrative politics of the subject matter. Many students leave art school with little idea about what makes a good painting in any historically formal sense. The best place to get this information is from the painters themselves."

The painting shown above is an 8"x8" oil on linen by
Sydney Licht. The interview, done by
Neil Plotkin, was picked as a top 10 blog post last year by the Huffington Post. One of Neil's paintings (oil on mylar) is shown at right.
